What is Tree City, USA?

Tree City, USA (found here) is an award recognizing a city's efforts to plan for tree care. To become a Tree City, four standards must be met. They are:

1. A Tree Board or Department - This provides special attention to meet tree-related planning needs.
2. A Tree Care Ordinance - This established legal framework for the care of the city's trees.
3. A Community Forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita - This ensures that adequate funding is committed to tree care.
4. An Arbor Day observance and proclamation - This annual event celebrates our community's trees.

So why are we interested in becoming a Tree City? Well, there are numerous reasons. For starters, meeting the four standards is an excellent way to effectively plan for trees. The benefits of trees are extensive. They provide clean air, shade, cooling in the summertime, bird and other animal habitats, wind breaks, stormwater treatment, and pleasing aesthetics. Trees are an investment in the well-being of our community that should be protected and enhanced.

Becoming a Tree City is a great way for Cheney to join the 73 other cities in Washington that are recognized for their commitment to tree care.
